Taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be intimidating or time consuming. Think of it like exercise, consistent care pays off - and building yourself a daily skincare routine will help your skin stay as healthy and happy as possible.
So whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to refine what you already do, this skincare guide from Dr Jonny Betteridge will walk you through a straightforward routine you can follow every day, from your morning routine to your evening routine.
Morning Routine
Step 1. Cleanse
We’d recommend starting the day by washing your face with a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type, which could potentially be a dry, oily, sensitive or a combination. Please don’t use soap - a cleanser is the way to go, and it helps remove sweat and oil and get your skin ready for the next steps.
Step 2. Hydrate and add your treatment (this step is optional)
Next, you can apply a serum tailored to what your skin needs. This is where having a personalised skincare consultation can be really beneficial - so you can completely understand how your skin works.
Step 3. Moisturise
Moisturising helps support the skin barrier, even if your skin is on the oilier side. We’d always recommend choosing a moisturiser which matches your skin type (eg if you have dry skin, using a formula which will work alongside it).
Step 4. Protect it with SPF
We couldn’t recommend this layer enough; please use sun protection! A SPF 30+ helps shields your skin from UV damage, premature ageing and uneven tone, and we’d recommend using this as the final step. On an especially bright and warm day, which we know is rare in the UK, we’d recommend reapplying SPF later in the day too.

Evening Routine
Step 1. Cleanse your face again
Washing your face at night removes the everyday dirt and pollution, as well as the SPF from the day, which will reduce the chance of breakouts. It’ll also give your night time skincare a chance to do its thing.
Step 2. Moisturise
At night, your skin repairs and renews itself and we’d use a nighttime moisturiser, which is typically thicker, after cleansing to add more hydration back into your skin.
Step 3. Any weekly extras (optional)
A gentle exfoliant can go a long way, but you only need to do this once or twice a week. It helps remove dead skin cells whilst giving your skin a smoother texture too.
Keep it simple and consistent
Honestly, the most effective routine is one you’ll actually follow. We always say to start with the basics - cleansing, moisturising, and protecting your skin with SPF is a brilliant place to start.
Once that’s become second nature, you could then look to add serums or targeted treatments. If you’re based in London, we can help you with this at our skin clinic and if you’d like to find out more, you can just here.
