How to Get Rid of Sun Damage: BBL HEROic, MOXI and Skincare for Post-Summer Pigmentation

Summer can be good for many things but your skin does not always agree.
By September, we often see patients at JB Aesthetics who have noticed changes that were far less obvious earlier in the year. Freckles look darker, patches of pigmentation have appeared across the cheeks or forehead, and the complexion generally looks less even. Sometimes brown spots sit alongside redness or a slightly rougher texture.
This is not necessarily the result of one particularly sunny holiday. Sun damage builds over time. Years of UV exposure can gradually affect pigmentation, collagen and overall skin quality, with increased summer exposure simply making those changes more noticeable.
The useful question, then, is not just how do I get rid of sun damage? It is what type of sun damage am I actually treating?
At our Marylebone clinic, that distinction guides what we recommend. BBL HEROic, MOXI and medical-grade skincare can all play a role in treating post-summer pigmentation, but each has a different purpose.
Why Does Pigmentation Look Worse After Summer?
When skin is exposed to ultraviolet light, it produces more melanin as part of its natural response to UV exposure. This is why the skin tans, but also why freckles, sunspots and existing areas of pigmentation can become darker.
The effect is often particularly noticeable towards the end of summer, when previously subtle brown spots or uneven areas become easier to see.
Repeated UV exposure can also contribute to collagen breakdown, so long-term sun damage is not purely a pigmentation problem. Texture, fine lines, redness and a general loss of radiance may appear alongside visible brown marks.
This is why we do not treat every pigmentation concern in the same way. Someone with a handful of clearly defined sunspots may need a different approach from someone with pigmentation, rougher texture and more general photodamage.
Is BBL HEROic Good for Sun Damage and Brown Spots?
When visible pigmentation is the main concern, BBL® HEROic™ can be particularly effective. BroadBand Light delivers controlled pulses of light that target unwanted pigment and redness without resurfacing the skin.
For post-summer skin, we may consider BBL HEROic for:
Sunspots and brown pigmentation
Freckles
Uneven skin tone
Redness
More widespread photodamage
If the texture of the skin is relatively good but brown or red areas are disrupting an otherwise even complexion, BBL HEROic allows us to focus on those colour changes.
Following treatment, pigmentation may temporarily darken before gradually fading or flaking. How many treatments are appropriate depends on the extent of the sun damage and how the skin responds.

When Is MOXI Better for Sun-Damaged Skin?
MOXI® Laser is often more appropriate when sun damage is affecting the overall quality of the skin rather than appearing as isolated brown spots.
This non-ablative fractional laser creates microscopic treatment zones that stimulate skin renewal while leaving surrounding tissue intact. It can help improve early pigmentation, uneven tone, rougher texture and overall clarity, while also supporting collagen production.
We often consider MOXI when someone describes their post-summer skin as dull or uneven and there are several subtle changes rather than one obvious concern.
In simple terms, BBL HEROic is particularly useful for unwanted colour, while MOXI addresses broader tone, texture and skin quality.

BBL HEROic, MOXI or Both: How Do We Decide?
Skin does not always fall neatly into one category. Many patients have visible pigmentation across the cheeks alongside rougher texture, enlarged-looking pores or a general loss of clarity.
This is where combining BBL HEROic and MOXI can be useful. Because the technologies work differently, BBL HEROic can address unwanted pigment and redness while MOXI supports fractional renewal and improvements in texture and overall skin quality.
That does not mean everyone needs both. For mild, isolated pigmentation, we may start with BBL HEROic and review the response. Where early pigmentation is accompanied by broader textural changes, MOXI may be more appropriate. If several aspects of sun damage are present, combining the two can provide a more comprehensive approach.
Skin type, the severity and pattern of pigmentation, recent sun exposure and previous treatments all influence this decision. We assess these factors before recommending BBL HEROic, MOXI or a combination.

Where Does Medical-Grade Skincare Fit Into Treating Sun Damage?
In-clinic treatment is only part of managing pigmentation.
At JB Aesthetics, we use Obagi Medical Skincare as part of personalised skincare plans for concerns including pigmentation and uneven tone. Rather than simply adding another brightening product, this allows us to build a structured routine around the individual skin.
Depending on what we see, a plan may focus on cell turnover, skin barrier support and appropriate active ingredients to improve pigmentation and clarity over time.
For milder cases, we may begin with skincare before deciding whether an in-clinic treatment is necessary. With more established post-summer pigmentation, skincare often works alongside BBL HEROic or MOXI to support and maintain the results.
Daily SPF is an important part of that plan. Treating existing pigmentation without protecting the skin from further UV exposure makes it much harder to maintain improvement.
Medical-grade skincare also needs to be used appropriately around laser and light treatments. Stronger is not automatically better, and active ingredients should be selected according to your skin, tolerance and treatment plan.
What Is the Best Treatment Plan for More Established Sun Damage?
With more established sun damage, it is usually more useful to think in terms of a skin plan rather than a single treatment.
Someone with a small amount of new freckling after summer is very different from someone who has accumulated pigmentation, redness and textural change over many years.
At JB Aesthetics, we assess which concern needs priority. We may begin with medical-grade skincare, use BBL HEROic where visible colour is the dominant concern, or introduce MOXI where texture and broader photodamage also need addressing. For some patients, a combination gives us the most appropriate way to treat several concerns. We then review how the skin responds rather than assuming everybody needs the same number of treatments.
This is particularly important with pigmentation. The aim is not to chase every mark with the strongest possible treatment, but to improve the skin safely and create a result that can realistically be maintained.
Can You Completely Get Rid of Sun Damage?
It is more realistic to talk about improving visible sun damage than permanently removing every sign of previous UV exposure.
BBL HEROic can improve appropriate areas of pigmentation and redness, while MOXI can address early photodamage, tone and texture. Medical-grade skincare and consistent sun protection can then help maintain those improvements.
None of these treatments makes the skin immune to future UV exposure, so ongoing prevention matters. For many patients, the longer-term goal becomes less about repeatedly correcting the skin after summer and more about keeping it clearer, healthier and more consistent throughout the year.
FAQs About Sun Damage and Post-Summer Pigmentation
How soon after a sunny holiday can I have BBL HEROic or MOXI?
Treatment should not be performed on actively tanned or recently heavily sun-exposed skin. The appropriate interval depends on your skin and the amount of recent exposure, so your practitioner will assess this before treatment rather than working to a universal timeline.
Can sun damage come back after treatment?
Yes. Treatment can improve existing sun damage, but future UV exposure can stimulate new pigmentation. This is why ongoing SPF and sensible sun protection remain important after treatment.
Can BBL HEROic or MOXI be used on the neck, chest and hands?
These areas can also show accumulated sun damage and may be suitable for treatment. The skin behaves differently in different areas, so suitability and treatment choice should be assessed individually.
Should I stop my active skincare before laser treatment?
Some active skincare products may need to be paused around BBL HEROic or MOXI. Your practitioner will advise you according to the products you use and your planned treatment.
Is post-summer pigmentation always caused by sun damage?
No. Not every brown patch is straightforward sun damage, and different forms of pigmentation do not necessarily respond to the same treatment. Assessment is particularly important if pigmentation is new, changing or has an unclear cause.
