Women’s Skincare in 40s: How to best look after your skin

Your 40s often bring subtle but noticeable changes in the skin.

Everyone’s experience is different, but it’s completely normal to see a little less volume through the mid-face, deeper lines forming around the nose and mouth, and a loss of firmness along the jawline, as an example.

That does mean your skincare may need updating and that’s where we can help. With the right approach, it’s completely possible to restore balance whilst supporting the skin’s structure.

Supporting your skin as it changes

In your 40s, skincare becomes less about quick fixes (and that ‘one size fits all’ advice) and more about long term support.

As collagen, elastin and volume begin to decline, we’d typically recommend shifting your focus towards:

  • Strengthening the skin so it feels firmer and more resilient

  • Softening lines

  • If you wanted to, exploring the aesthetics side of your skin (where you’re able to restore volume where it’s been lost)

Treatments we often recommend

Our first recommendation - start with an in-person, skincare analysis

If a doctor or skincare practitioner can take a detailed look at your skin - assessing past the first layer of your skin, you’ll be able to understand exactly how your skin’s working. At our skincare clinic in London we use the OBSERV 520X to do this; it takes multiple photos of your skin which can be really helpful when we’re tracking your skin’s progress over time too.

Female skin

MOXI laser

The MOXI laser is a brilliant option for improving skin tone and texture. It works well for softening pigmentation, refining pores and restoring a more even, radiant complexion.

BBL HEROic (BroadBand Light)

The BBL HEROic uses broadband light to stimulate collagen production to support firmer, healthier-looking skin. If you have redness, sun damage and uneven pigmentation, this can be a brilliant option.

Profhilo

Profhilo is a hydrating injectable treatment that helps improve skin quality and elasticity. It subtly firms and refreshes the skin without adding volume.

Supporting treatments

If you were looking for other treatment options, like anti-wrinkle treatments such as Botox, they can help us soften expression lines whilst having a refreshed appearance.

Skincare we’d recommend

This is our chance to remind you about the essentials too.

We’d highly recommend wearing SPF daily - even on days where it’s not particularly sunny (and we know a lot of people forget to do this!). On the extra bright and warm days, please do reapply it throughout the day too.

Depending on your skin’s health in general, we’d recommend your precise skincare steps are personalised - which comes from an in-person consultation but cleansing, toning and moisturising are all essential steps of your skincare in your 40s.

Why a personalised plan makes all the difference

No two skins will age in exactly the same way. Lifestyle, genetics, and even past skincare choices all play a role in how your skin looks and feels in your 40s.

A personalised consultation allows us to look at your skin in detail and create a plan that feels balanced and completely tailored to you. We have a clinic based in Marylebone, London (just around the corner from Selfridges) if you’d like to pay us a visit.

With the right support, your 40s can be a time where your skin feels stronger, healthier and more radiant than ever, and we’re here to help you look and feel your best.
