Your Postpartum Skincare Routine - Caring for Your Skin After Pregnancy

If you’ve experienced changes to your skin after your pregnancy, that’s completely normal. Your hormones are likely to be readjusting - your daily routine is now completely different (and you’re probably not sleeping as well either!) so don’t worry, we’re here to help.
How your skin can change after pregnancy
Postpartum skin changes are very common. You might notice:
Increased sensitivity or dryness
Breakouts or acne flare-ups
Dullness or uneven tone
Pigmentation changes, such as melasma
Changes in elasticity or new areas of irritation
We know how much your skin can affect your confidence too - especially when you’re adjusting to having a young baby, so we’d recommend this easy to follow routine to help support your skin.
If you’re based in London too, our skincare clinic supports women during postpartum and we’d love to welcome you to our clinic in Marylebone.
Building a gentle, effective routine
Here are some easy ways you can support your skin after pregnancy:
Start with a mild cleanser
We’d choose a fragrance-free, gentle cleanser, then it won’t strip away any essential oils or irritate any delicate skin.
Hydrate your skin
Which type of moisturiser are you using? We’d recommend one that supports your skin type, using a lighter one during the day and a thicker one at night - it’ll help repair your skin.
Please use SPF
Even on cloudy days, we’d really recommend using SPF every day. It can sit underneath your make up, and there are lots of different types depending on whether you can reapply it during the day or not. (We’d look for SPF 30 and above if you can)
Be gentle with exfoliation
We’d avoid harsh scrubs too and instead, use a mild chemical exfoliant, such as lactic acid once or twice a week if your skin tolerates it. This will help promote gentle cell turnover.
Supporting your skin beyond products
Postpartum skin care isn’t just about what you put on your face - lifestyle habits can make a big difference too:
Even short bursts of rest can be really good for your skin
Drink two litres of water a day, so you stay hydrated
A balanced nutritional diet works wonders, prioritising wholefoods over ultra processed food
Where you can, self-care and mindfulness - anything which helps reduce your stress levels, we’d really recommend too
We can help you too
